Artist's Statement
Growing up, my family had a difficult time getting along when all of us were together. I typically laid low during family vacations and events, trying to cause as little havoc as possible to assure everyone had a peaceful time, because I knew it definitely didn't always go smoothly. When we still had a boat, my dad took us all out on it to Montauk. This is my clearest memory of any family vacation because it was the only time I can vividly remember us all getting along and really enjoying each other's company without any arguing on a trip together. The feeling of wholeness I recognized reflecting on that trip with my family is something I hold close. The 5 pieces represent the 5 members of my family while the small round magnets in the face of each part which holds them together represents the unconditional bond of a family. The rope emphasizes exactly how important that boat trip going smoothly meant to me, even if none of my family members had realized it. This momento reminds me of hardships my family has had with keeping the peace but also of the good memories that come out of it when we do.
